While in Tasmania, near Pyengana, which is basically a fairly pristine forested area, TheTreeApp team were startled to recognise the invasive tree, Crack Willow, Salix fragilis – originally from Europe and Western Asia. As in South Africa there it was – one mature sturdy tree with dozens of emerging offspring, crowding the banks further down the river. Its vitality and power to outcompete indigenous plants was as scary there, as it is in the distribution map areas of home. Look out for it and aim to control it if possible. If you’re g in any of these areas see if you can spot it along our rivers.
